Day 1: A relatively short flight from Auckland brought me into Nadi - Fiji´s capital city. Whilst arranging my transfer to a hostel, I met a nice British couple (Gavin & Faye), who I ended up sharing a mini-bus with.
After dropping them off, I arrived into central Nadi and was immediately quite shocked at the state of the place. They had some severe flooding quite recently and the damage caused has left it in quite a mess. Not exactly the scene I was expecting upon arrival into supposedly one of the world´s most beautiful countries and it was quite sad to see. Shops and Businesses closed down all over the place.
However, the state of the town didn´t compare to that of my hostel, which is probably in the running for being one of the worst places I´ve stayed in on the whole trip. Small, grotty and generally not very clean either. Hopefully, it would just be one night here.
I didn´t have much of the day left after checking in so I just had a brief walk around town before getting some food. As you can imagine, not a great deal to see.
Day 2: After coming down with a pretty bad case of man-flu, I didn´t really fancy venturing out to the islands just yet. I felt really rough so consigned myself to a day in bed to try and get better. Quite a few months since I´ve been ill so I guess it was due at some point. The hostel wasn´t exactly the sort of place you want to get ill and have to spend the entire day though so I was pretty fed up. Fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.
Whilst at the hostel, I met an older guy called Dave (Aus), who used to be a Professional Cricketer and has currently been banned from going back to Australia because he has spent too long out of the country. This, despite marrying another Aussie a few months back. I had an interesting chat with him on my day of feeling sorry for myself.
Hopefully, I´d be venturing out to the islands tomorrow. What Fiji is really about.
